Building a New Chapter for Hancock County: Bowman Constructors Begins Work on Hancock Judicial Center

A courthouse is more than a building where legal proceedings take place. It must support the day-to-day work of the justice system while serving everyone who enters its doors. Designing and building a space that can meet those demands well into the future requires careful planning, close collaboration, and experienced craftsmanship.

That work is now underway in Ellsworth as Bowman Constructors begins construction on the new Hancock Judicial Center.

Breaking Ground with the Hancock Judicial Center

The project reached an important milestone on July 7, 2026, when community leaders, state officials, members of the Maine Judicial Branch, project partners, and residents gathered for the official groundbreaking ceremony. The event marked the beginning of construction on a new facility designed to serve Hancock County and support the continued work of the judicial system. Maine Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice Valerie Stanfill spoke at the event, expressing that this upgrade will allow court cases to be a safer experience.

The Hancock Judicial Center will be constructed on an 18-acre parcel off Merrill Lane, following an agreement between the Woodwell family and the City of Ellsworth. The center represents years of collaboration between the Maine Judicial Branch, the City of Ellsworth, and project partners who worked together to bring the project forward. Now, Bowman Constructors will help turn that planning into a finished building.
